Batavus BuB — Coming Soon

We recently posted a quick look at the forthcoming BuB bicycle from Batavus. The bike is definitely getting attention for its unique “paperclip” design, but we feel that the bigger picture lifestyle objective might be overlooked. In other words, the bike is both modern in its design and intention.

Batavus BuB Classic -- Silver

But first, let’s dispense with some of the details:

  • Available early Spring of 2010.
  • It will cost $550.
  • 3-speed drivetrain with a coaster brake.
  • Classic frame or Step-Through frame (“sizes” are somewhat irrelevant because of adjustability.)
  • The color choices are: Gloss or matte black, battleship gray, raw silver, red (matte), or white with white tires.
  • Front racks, rear racks, and battery powered lights are options.

More importantly, we’ve composed a list of characteristics that help an interested buyer decide if the BuB is actually the right bike for their needs. For details about the BuB’s design concept and marketplace, please read the Background on the Batavus BuB post at Bicycle Design.

The BuB is not for you if …

  • You see the bicycle as “tool” in your workout arsenal.
  • You confuse the terms “cycle chic” and “cycle chick”.
  • You fret over how many grams the BuB Mood might add.
  • You live in a “penthouse” without an elevator or a safe place to store your bike.
  • You have competed in the RAAM.
  • You feel Bicycling Magazine’s “Buy It If, Don’t Buy It If …” reviews suffice.
  • You walk in public places using the phrase, “On your left!”

You’ll love the BuB if …

  • You know what a Panda Portrait is.
  • Your bike trips are 5 miles or less and usually completed at a casual pace.
  • You’re a regular reader of Let’s Go Ride a Bike!
  • You enjoy waiving at children like royalty.
  • You are a subscriber to Momentum Magazine.
  • You want to carry about zillion lbs. of goodies on a front or rear rack.
  • You enjoy pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.
  • You see the bicycle as a practical means of transportation.

And if these examples don’t make the intent of the Batavus BuB clear enough, just use this simple litmus test:

  • “When I ride my bike, I feel like the world is my oyster.”
    • Yes, I agree = The BuB is you kind of bike.
    • Nope = Maybe a Batavus Spirit CS is a better option.
    • I Wish = If your cycling is about the journey and not the destination, then give the BuB a closer second look.

Renaissance Bicycles is now accepting deposits for the BuB.
