Rivendell Bicycle Works – Betty Foy
Rivendell Bicycle Works (known as Riv Bike to you and me) has something special for you:
The Betty Foy is a women’s specific bike that is meant to be serious transportation. Purist roadies may scoff at the mixte style, but we believe in what Rivendell has to say about the bike:
“The Betty Foy is designed for women, with a low diagonal tube that’s easier to step over. That is the only significant functional difference between the Betty Foy and the Hillborne, and the A. Homer Hilsen.
What’s it for?
- Any kind of road rides–solo, club rides, fitness rides, whatever
- Commuting
- Weekend touring, fully loaded touring
- Fire trails, bike camping”

The innovative characteristic of the Betty Foy is the expanded geometry. It is designed to provide a comfortable upright position by “expanding” the headtube rather than “compacting” the seattube. In other words, there is no need for goofy stems and awkward seat heights to get a comfortable fit.
Both models sport the 650b wheel size. The 650b is a rediscovered size that is between a mountain bike and road bike wheel. It provides the responsiveness of a MTB wheel, and the centrifical force of a road wheel. Basically it is the ideal for commuting, fire trails, and all-purpose riding.
Also note that these first production frames come with a quality bottom bracket and headset already installed.
The Betty Foy comes in two frame sizes:
- 52cm frame for riders from 5’3″ to 5’7″ (or with a PBH of 73cm to 81cm)
- 58cm frame for riders from 5’7″ to 6’1″ (or with a PBH of 81cm to 88cm)
These guidelines are not hard-and-fast rules, but they should give you an idea of where you fall frame-wise. Please contact us if you need any explanation or recommendations.
