We continue to be big fans of the lugged steel Soma Framesets. And based on how quickly they sell, a lot of other people are into these neo-classic style bikes as well.
Stanyan – Modern Lugged Steel
We love the recent revival in lugged steel, and Soma has really nailed it with the next generation of the Speedster, the Stanyan. Not only does the Stanyan have the classic flavor of chromed lugs, it also has the versatility of a modern road bike. The road sport geometry is perfect for long rides, family outings, and daily commutes.

The Stanyan features eyelets for fenders, mounts for front and rear racks, and downtube shifter bosses (if you really want to go Old School). It is crafted of high quality Tange Prestige double-butted tubing with the understated design elements you’d expect from Soma Fabrications.

Soma Stanyan Frameset: $675 (plus $35 shipping & handling)
Of course, we can also build the bike any way that you desire … winter training, credit card touring, commuting, etc. In other words, this is more versatile than your average road bike, so you can make it your own. Ours looks like this:

Of course, we have a other popular options:
- Classic Steel [View Build Details] – Shimano 105 silver drivetrain; Mavic custom wheels; Nitto bars, stem, seatpost, rack; Brooks saddle; Honjo fenders, etc. Basically, all of the right shiny parts to give this modern bike a classic look. Apart from specific parts requests, the build is $1650. (And don’t forget to add the frame.)
- Modern Steel – SRAM Rival black drivetrain; FSA RD-420 wheelset; FSA bars, stem, seatpost; Soma black saddle; SKS black fenders. Depending on your preferences, the build-up would look similar to this Soma Double Cross. The complete build (less the frame) is $1750.
